Treatments for myeloma

Standard treatment options include:

1. Targeted therapy: Targeted drug focus on specific site present within cancer cells allow blocking abnormalities posing to carcinogenesis and can cause cancer cells to die.

2. Immunotherapy: Immunotherapy uses host/patient’s own immune system to fight cancer. Immunotherapy works by interfering with production proteins by cancer cells that help them hide from the immune system cells of body.

3. Chemotherapy Uses drugs to kill cancer cells that are fast-growing, including myeloma cells.

4. Corticosteroids medications to regulate the immune system and also active it against myeloma cells.

5. Bone marrow transplant replaces diseased bone marrow with healthy bone marrow.

6. Radiation therapy uses high-powered energy beams from sources such as X-rays and protons to kill cancer cells.

7. CAR T cell therapy/(chimeric antigen receptor T-cells therapy)

  1. Anemia due to shortage of red blood cells
  2. Excessive bleeding from cuts to the skin as there is a shortage of platelets
  3. Decreased ability to fight infection due to deprivation of white blood cells
  4. The host’s inability is not uncommon to respond to infection because of the presence of abnormal antibodies

Advanced and a new form of cancer immunotherapy. In this patient’s own T cells are engineered with anticancer properties for malignant multiple myeloma cells. The idea of using here of a patient’s own immune cells to fight cancer cells is highly promising therapeutic approach i.e. advancing in multiple myeloma. If patient of multiple myeloma is a candidate for bone marrow transplant, the initial therapy will likely include a combination of treatments, such as CAR T cell therapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy, corticosteroids and, sometimes, chemotherapy. After bone marrow transplant, targeted therapy or immunotherapy as a maintenance treatment to prevent a recurrence of myeloma are promising.
